The Small Business Banking Conference Strikes a Chord in Nashville

Posted December 07, 2015 by Kevin McNamara

NashvilleMissed the 17th Annual Small Business Banking Conference in Nashville and felt out of tune ever since? Well, don’t fret!

The conference theme revolved around three key areas: Capital, Product & People, and Customers...all topics that are right up our alley here at Vertical IQ...so our team took really good notes! Here is a two-minute overview of the insights we took away from Music City...

  • In the small business segment leader panel (featuring executives from Pinnacle Bank, Santander Bank, and Umpqua Bank), the speakers acknowledged that small business banking must be a "deposit generating machine," and to do this, bank processes need to be uncomplicated, both for the employee and for the customer. Bankers must have the right tools in place to make their jobs simpler and to allow them to offer valuable advice to the customer.
  • The head of business products at JP Morgan Chase talked about innovative bank relationships that are tailored to the customer's unique needs, which, from the customer's perspective, make a bank's value proposition crystal clear.
  • The presentation by JD Power gave insight into what small business banking customers want from their bank, namely, someone who understands their business, can be a trusted advisor, and will make their financial life easier.
  • The director of strategy and sales delivery for retail business banking at Fifth Third discussed that banks must learn to better-satisfy the needs of small business customers if they hope to gain their allegiance, especially with the influx of alternative lending options that are flooding the market. One key to customer loyalty is finding ways for bankers to be proactive instead of reactive.
  • American Banker's BankThink Live presented on the growth stages of a small business and how banks must move beyond mere customer satisfaction to achieve loyalty and eventually (hopefully), commitment, in which a customer feels their banker is a crucial part of their inner-circle of advisors.
